Brig. Gen. Ryan M. Janovic assumed duty as the deputy commander of Joint Force Headquarters – Cyber (JFHQ-C), U.S. Army Cyber Command on Aug. 16, 2019. The JFHQ-C provides cyberspace support to U.S. Central Command, U.S. Africa Command and U.S. Northern Command.
Janovic has served in a variety of staff, leadership and command positions throughout his career. In his most recent assignment he served as the executive officer to the U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) Commanding General, transitioning with the commander as the executive officer at United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/United States Forces Korea.
A native of Akron, Ohio, Janovic entered active duty as a second lieutenant of the Military Intelligence Corps, where he has spent the past 26 years serving in various intelligence organizations at all echelons. He began his career as a platoon leader in the 201st Military Intelligence Battalion, 513th Military Intelligence Brigade at Fort Gordon, Ga.
As a junior captain, Janovic served as the brigade intelligence officer for the 1st Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea. He remained overseas with the 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where he commanded the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 125th Military Intelligence Battalion.
Following Command and General Staff College, Janovic served in Baghdad, Iraq as the aide and deputy executive officer to the deputy chief of staff for political, military and economic affairs, Multi-National Forces – Iraq. In the summer of 2005 he reported to Fort Meade, Md., to serve with the 902d Military Intelligence Group, the Army’s premier multidiscipline counterintelligence brigade, first as operations officer (S3) for the 308th Military Intelligence Battalion, and later served as the brigade S3.
Janovic was selected as a White House Fellow in the class of 2008-2009, and served the Secretary of Agriculture and later, the Commissioner of the General Services Administration. At the conclusion of his fellowship, he reported to Fort Knox, Ky., and assumed command of the Special Troops Battalion of 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. He trained, prepared, and deployed the Valiant Warriors to eastern Afghanistan; Task Force Valiant served the Duke Brigade, Regional Command – East, and the 2nd Zone Afghan Border Police throughout 2011.
Following command, Janovic attended the National War College in Washington, D.C. and served on the Army staff in the Headquarters, Department of the Army Intelligence Office (G2). He then returned to command, assuming leadership of the 504th Military Intelligence Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas, followed by two years' service as FORSCOM deputy chief of staff for intelligence (G2).
Janovic is a 1993 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and a distinguished graduate from the National War College in Washington, D.C., where he earned a master's degree in National Strategic Studies.
His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (one oak leaf cluster); the Defense Superior Service Medal; the Bronze Star Medal (one oak leaf cluster); and the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award.
