Maj. Gen. Robin L. Fontes has served as Deputy Commanding General (Operations), U.S. Army Cyber Command, since December 2019.
She graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at WestPoint, N.Y., in May 1986 and commissioned as a second lieutenant. Upon graduation she completed the Military Police (MP) Officer Basic Course.
During her career she has served in a number of command, staff and joint positions, including service as Platoon Leader with the 287th MP Company in Berlin, Germany; MP Company Commander in the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry at the U.S. Military Academy; Provost Marshal Operations Officer and later Commander of the 2nd MP Co., 2nd Infantry Division, Republic of Korea; Military Representative and later Defense and Army Attaché in the Republic of Tajikistan; Central Asia Political-Military Affairs Officer for U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.; Chief of Political-Military Affairs and later Chief of Regional Engagement for Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan; commander of the Provincial Reconstruction Team, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force in Afghanistan; Chief of the Security Assistance Office, Office of the Defense Representative in Pakistan; Commander, Regional Support Command-North, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Training Mission Afghanistan/Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan; Senior Advisor to the Commander and later Director of the Election Support Cell, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command in Afghanistan; Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché in the Republic of India; Deputy Director for Strategy, Plans and Policy for the U.S. Army Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (G-3/5/7) in Washington, D.C.; and Commander, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan.
Fontes has completed five operational assignments in Afghanistan, including four tours in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and one tour in support of OPERATION FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.
She has earned a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Military Academy, and master’s degrees in International Affairs from the University of Washington and in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National Defense University.
Her military education includes the MP Officer Basic and Advanced Courses; the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College; the National War College; the Defense Language Institute; and the DIA. Fontes is conversant in Russian, Persian-Farsi, and Dari.
Fontes’ awards, decorations and badges include the Defense Superior Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters); the Legion of Merit; the Bronze Star Medal; the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (with three oak leaf clusters); the Meritorious Service Medal (with one oak leaf cluster); the Joint Service Commendation Medal (with one oak leaf cluster); the Army Commendation Medal; the Army Achievement Medal; the Combat Action Badge; and the Parachutist Badge.
